So, you may have noticed that our social media posts this week haven’t exactly been relating to digital marketing, SEO, or web design like they normally would. But there is a good reason for this! We have been posting about some rather strange National Days, and in this blog, we’ll tell you why!
Firstly, I want to clarify that the digital marketer behind the posts doesn’t just have food on her brain. These silly National Days such as French Fry Day (I am slightly disappointed that it didn’t fall on a Friday because FryDay would have been a great pun!), Mac ‘n’ Cheese Day and even Gummy Worm Day are all great opportunities for companies selling those food products to raise their brand awareness. And it’s not just food products, if you think about it, it’s similar to how Father’s Day and Mother’s Day can be used by companies to promote products such as flowers, cards, and sentimental gifts.
On National French Fry Day, McDonald’s offered free fries to anyone who obtained a certain code, and this was shared all over social media. #NationalFrenchFryDay was trending on Twitter as users all over the world were sharing how to obtain the free fries.
Now, you may be wondering how giving away free fries could actually benefit McDonalds. Chances are, people weren’t just going to show up for their free fries and leave. Maybe they’d buy a burger or a milkshake too, and they would likely tell their friends about how to get some free fries – leading to more people doing the same thing. McDonalds are a very well-established brand already, but the free fries campaign still encourages people to visit their local McDonalds and buy a few things to eat.
It’s not just big corporations that do this! Local businesses can also take advantage of these national days to get more sales, in my local area some of the independent restaurants were offering free or half-price ice cream on National Ice Cream Day, and some of the sweet shops were doing deals on gummy sweets on National Gummy Worm Day. These kinds of discounts encourage people to visit stores and make a few purchases, which is great for small businesses and independent shops. So if you see us promoting any somewhat random national days- try and see if you can support a local business selling those kinds of products!
Here’s something fun that you should try! See what funny national days happen to fall on your birthday! For example, my birthday is also National Bagel Day. Let us know what National day your birthday falls on by commenting on our Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or Twitter pages!
